PÄRTinPRIMETIME - from 22 to 24 February

“What should a composer do?” was the question put by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt to a road sweeper in a frustrating period of writer’s block. “Cherish every note” was the answer. None of Pärt’s music teachers had ever expressed it so tersely. The simple clarity of the answer inspired the composer to a new and exceedingly pure style of music, making him a favourite worldwide ever since the seventies.

Pärt’s universal sound is surely the most recognizable one of all contemporary composers. The moving beauty of his music makes for frequent use of his work in films and TV programmes. Even if the name Pärt does not immediately ring a bell, indubitably you have already heard his music.

PÄRTinPRIMETIME will offer a comprehensive picture of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt: some of the larger, epic works on Friday, a cappella choral music on Saturday, a film documentary and some of Pärt’s most famous and popular works on Sunday.
