2018 is going to be a special year for AMUZ. Laus Polyphoniae, the festival dedicated to the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in the summer. In the autumn of 2018, AMUZ will be setting its sights on Baroque music, as part of Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens inspires. The linchpin of the musical activities will be 1618, the year in which St. Augustine’s Church was opened. Various styles of music co-existed at the time: the older polyphony and the new Baroque monody. Laus Polyphoniae will present music from before 1618, from Gregorian chants to sumptuous polyphony. The new musical styles and genres of the Baroque, on the other hand, can be heard in abundance in the autumn: secular operas, religious cantatas and instrumental music. Lovers of Baroque music will have plenty to look forward to. What is more, AMUZ has something special in store for the eyes as well as the ears. Four hundred years after the consecration of St. Augustine’s Church, Jan Fabre will be making an art installation that offers an interesting perspective on the historic building.
